  1. Not to nitpick, but they raised $40,000 on Kickstarter and the other funds are coming outside of Kickstarter. Still really awesome, though. And really good guys.

  2. The Mystery Brewing website seems unclear to me in places, because reading through it, I couldn’t actually tell if the brewery was open anywhere. The only place I was able to get the full story was in that buried, but very long and informative post about the progress that led to the brick and mortar brewery.

    When it IS available, will the beer be distributed? How will you design packaging if every batch is different and you don’t ever make the same thing twice?

    My other question is that when you’re distributing 7 oz mini-bottles, what kind of glasses are you pouring those into? I don’t know about you, but I don’t have any that are “proper” for that amount of beer.

  3. It is a little unclear as to whether they are actually open for business or not, but under “contact us” the hours are listed “by appointment only” which is a pretty good clue.

    In the interview, he said they would be doing local draft accounts at beer bars and sell at the brewery.

    I don’t think he said he doesn’t brew the same beer twice- with the fluctuations in hop availability being flexible with recipes is a must for brewers of this size.

    As to glassware, I’d be fine drinking a seven ounce bottle from my twelve ounce snifters. Or you could always pour two, Kid.

  5. Good God, never have I been so inspired to start a brewery. That was a fantastic podcast. Quick question – Anyone have $70k burning a hole in their pocket? Sure could use the funds to get my sour program off to the right start.

    As for the glass for your 7oz beer, I use one from Belzebuth (At least I used to back in the day when I could get Rogue Old Crustacean in the little bottles). Belzebuth is an absolutely horrible 13%ABV sugar-bomb of a beer but the glass is cool and small. Short of that you could use a traditional Kolsch glass since that’s just under 7oz.

  6. Slouch: You’re probably right that his plans have changed by now. The “no two beers the same” thing I mentioned are from his original Kickstarter page, which says:

    “This I promise: No two batches of my beer will ever be the same. There will be no set product line. Instead, I’ll have a constantly-rotating selection of beers. Think of it as a full line-up of seasonals. If a beer is popular? Certainly, I’ll make it again – but I’ll tweak it. I’ll always be asking myself, “How can I make this beer even better than it was before?” Each batch of beer will be dated and numbered uniquely, like you see on a bottle of wine or good liquor. Year to year, the beer will change (all beer does, even if breweries don’t tell you it does), and I’ll provide the tools for people to enjoy the changes.”
