When I was scouring the web for an image to serve as the intro to our Best Beer Labels post, I stumbled across a brilliant map of the US where all of the states had been replaced by local brewery logos. A number of readers asked for a higher-res image of the picture and I sadly had to explain to them that I hadn’t actually created the map.

But I’m nothing if not attentive to our readers…so I decided to create a bigger, better version of the image. The original map was a thing of beauty, but it had some problems. Most of the brewer logos were dated or obsolete (or in the case of Arkansas, missing completely). Plus, there were logos for breweries like Coors and Anheuser-Busch which no self-respecting Alehead would put on their map. Instead, I selected what I considered to be an excellent representation of craft beer in each state. Obviously I had to make some sacrifices where certain states are concerned, but I think I did a decent job with my selections.*

*Note: I’ve retroactively swapped this new image into the original Best Beer Labels post. So if you’re looking for the old version, click here.

Hope you enjoy, Alehead Nation!

  1. MI and CA got two mostly because of their respective shapes. I realize Bell’s doesn’t brew in the Upper Peninsula, but I figured I had two landmasses to work with, so why not honor the two big guns in the Michigan craft beer scene. California was an impossible choice, so I just went with two of the cooler logos from SoCal and NorCal (Russian River or Lagunitas would have been great up North, but their logos are kind of ugly…same for Port and Green Flash down South).

The hardest ones to make out, because of size, are Dogfish Head in Delaware, White Birch in NH, Flying Dog in Maryland, and Narragansett in Rhode Island. Wisconsin is New Glarus…it’s an ugly logo, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to insert a Wisconsin-shaped thumbprint into the actual outline of Wisconsin.
