STYLE: English Brown Ale

ABV: 5.8%

APPEARANCE: Chestnut brown

HEAD: Very full, very creamy tan head that last and lasts (and lasts)

LACING: Nice, chunky lacing throughout

NOSE: Smells just right. Toffee, molasses, brown sugar, and roasted malts. Very little hop profile, just warm, sweet, malty goodness.

TASTE: Just like the nose. Sweet caramel and molasses, a hint of spice, and a slightly bitter, dry finish. A perfect Brown Ale flavor.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-bodied with gentle, but ample carbonation. Nice, creamy mouthfeel.

DRINKABILITY: Yes, please. The Bell’s Best Brown is a true, blue session beer. The kind of beer you keep drinking until the keg or the case runs dry.

RATING: 3 Hops. Herein lies the limitation of our rating system (and one of the reasons you should ignore the ratings entirely and just read the descriptions). For a Brown Ale, the Bell’s Best is top-notch. But since Brown Ales are inherently “plain” beers, it’s hard to rate them much higher than 3 Hops. If we did purely style-specific ratings, it would be much higher…but since everything gets rated against everything else, I simply can’t give the Bell’s Best Brown the same rating as the top Russian Imperials, Quads, Double IPAs, etc. Blame the system.
