NOTES: Bottle @ Eulogy Belgian Tavern in Philly
STYLE: Belgian Strong Dark Ale
ABV: 9.5%
APPEARANCE: Deep, hazy chestnut
HEAD: Gargantuan, light tan head that rapidly fades to a tight, small crown
LACING: Big, chunky rings
NOSE: Gotta love a classic BSDA nose. Dates, figs, tons of spice, and sweet, dark malt. This one is a touch more sour than most with a strong, red wine undercurrent.
TASTE: Fruit and sweetness up front…caramel, molasses, and the aforementioned ripe dates and figs. The sour, vinous flavor comes out in the middle of the sip and the finish is a pleasant balance of the two dominant tastes (sweet and sour). A bit of boozy bitterness lingers after each sip.
MOUTHFEEL: A wee bit overcarbonated (a common trait for De Dolle). It’s a medium to full-bodied brew.
DRINKABILITY: Hard not to love anything produced by the masters at De Dolle. I’d pick the Stille Nacht as my favorite from the “Mad Brewers”, but the Oerbier is close behind. A great and surprisingly drinkable offering.
RATING: 3.5 Hops
I believe I ordered up a bottle of the Oerbier because I read the tap list wrong (Turned out it was just on special, not on tap). In any case, I agree with your assessment as this is most definitely my second favorite offering from one of my favorite breweries in the world. Stille Nacht takes the cake, but the Oerbier comes in right on its tail.
