NOTES: Draft @ Every Restaurant/Bar Ever

STYLE: Vienna Lager

ABV: 4.65%

APPEARANCE: Deep amber with good clarity

HEAD: Off-white, frothy, and long-lasting

LACING: Nothing special

NOSE: Subtle, pleasant…and it floods the brain with memories (at least if you’re an ex-pat Masshole like me). A mellow, sweet caramel nose with nice undertones of spicy, herbal hops. Hoppier than most lagers, but not aggressively so.

TASTE: Umm…it tastes like Sam Adams? Is that good enough? No? OK…like the nose implies, the flavor is mostly well-rounded malt sweetness up front followed by a wash of mildly bitter hops and a very crisp, very clean finish.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body with high carbonation. There’s something uniquely smooth about the SABL’s mouthfeel. Maybe it’s just because I’ve had it 1,000 times…

DRINKABILITY: About as high as it gets. A well-crafted lager with just enough hop profile to separate it from the pack. It’s not an amazing beer by any stretch of the imagination. But it drinks well in hot weather or cold. It drinks well in good times or bad. It’s the beer that jump-started the American craft beer movement. And it tastes like home.

  1. Hey, I’ve got no problem with you reviewing Sam’s Boston lager. Maybe we should just take a week and post out all the everyday brews to get them out of our systems. I call Sierra pale ale, someone can do anchor steam, then we’ll just pull some schmuck in a north face fleece off the street to review Fat Tire. I smell a 5,000 word McHops posting coming up tomorrow…
